Wednesday 20th June was World Bee Day. Bees are such an important part of our ecosystem. They are amazing pollinators that contribute significantly to the formation of fruiting plants and seed production. Find out more here:
St. Michael's Nursery is recognised as am official 'Friend of the Honey Bee' as part of The British Beekeepers Association, founded 1974.
As an eco-nursery, we are dedicated to supporting the biodiversity and the ecosystem and we believe that this starts with awareness, knowledge, experience and education from an early age. Children learn about the environment throughout the year and we have been particularly learning about pollinators during gardening club.
Our youngest children in Ladybirds and Butterflies have been exploring the sensory table, enjoying songs, rhymes and books.
Dragonflies have been learning about bees and how they look for brightly coloured flowers for their food. They know that bees make honey for the winter and they enjoyed the story 'Betty the Bee' by Emily Hobson-Martin.
Kindergarten have enjoyed learning about how bees forage for nectar and pollen. We planted some wild flowers in gardening club. We even had real beekeepers visit with beautiful honeybees. They learnt amazing facts and even enjoyed some delicious honey on crackers. Thank you Alan and Jayne for your informative talk. We enjoyed meeting the bees and of course the Queen Bee 'Bluebell'.
