We always enjoy our Forest School sessions when Kim from The Learning Journey visits. Not only a qualified Primary School teacher, Kim is a Forest School Leader and therefore brings a fresh twist to learning, recognising that children learn best through play, curiosity, exploration, discovery and freedom. She is talented in inviting the children in to learn through either a book, a character, an intriguing area set up to bring them in. This in turn enables Kim to support their learning in that moment and scaffold their development.
This week, Kim started the session by reading us 'The Bog Baby' by Jeanne Willis. Afterwards, children were welcomed at the clay station to design and create their very own bog baby to take home. Through exploring the clay, the children learnt about how to attach clay limbs properly using 'slip', they talked about shape, size, texture, imprints, loose parts to embellish and even the character and personality of their Bog Baby.
In true Forest School style, this 'hook' went in many different and unexpected ways. The children used buckets and watering cans of water to flood the digging pit and create their own swamp! They then proceeded to lie down in the mud and become the bog babies! We love learning with MUD!
