Christmas Cranberry Campfire Crackers
There is nothing better than a delicious snack cooked over the campfire whilst singing cheerful Christmas carols. Kim from The Learning Journey and our very own Forest School Lead Katie 'Fox' hosted a Campfire morning with some of the children in Kindergarten. Kim, (who is a Forest School Practioner and qualified Primary school teacher who offers home tutoring), spent a delightful morning with the children offering crafts with sticks, bells and wool.
After a fun session in the woods, the children gathered around the campfire and enjoyed learning about the 'fire triangle', how to light and maintain a fire and the different size sticks.
A big part of Forest School is building a community feel and supporting controlled risk such as dangerous elements and tool work. Children experience 'recapitulative play' which means play that allows the child to explore ancestry, history, rituals, stories, rhymes and fire.
Every single session starts with the children entering the fire circle safely, even when the fire is not in session. This instills a routine, a deep respect for the rules of the fire circle and prepares the children from a young age to respect this area.
The children were fascinated watching Kim prepare and light the fire.
We melted cheese over the grill and served the delicious melted cheddar with cranberry sauce and crackers. The children loved them and even had seconds!
