Our theme this month of June is 'All Around the World' and this invites all kinds of discussions and conversations surrounding food, festivals, customs, traditions, buildings, transport, language, weather, animals, music, dance, art, sport, dress and so much more. These wonderful conversations, stories, rhymes, songs, music, posters and the abundance of resources that we have entwined within our practice, creates positive images, awareness and understanding of the world. We really are creating little citizens with knowledge of the wide world!
The little Ladybirds and Butterflies have been out enjoying walks in the sunshine, singing along with Clare from Story Bears, enjoying their spill out secure garden balcony and exploring the fluffy floury 'clouds' in the sensory tray. They were invited to play with little scoops and this prompted a curiosity to scoop and pour the flour. This is an excellent sensory and physical coordination activity for tiny hands.
If you need a travel agent, pop along to the Dragonflies Travel Agency. Their office is open Monday to Friday! Complete with laptops, telephones and brochures, the Dragonfly children have all the answers to your wanderlust needs! They will happily advise you on which animals you might see, the climate of different countries and even the food you might experience. They can also issue you with boarding passes tickets, stamp your passport and discuss the mode of transport you require. Air St. Michael's comes highly recommended!
Kindergarten have also been looking at countries around the world. They have been writing and drawing their own little postcards, describing their own little travels and holiday experiences. "I been on a train, it went under the ground!" They even designed little postage stamps and we discussed how the post is delivered around the world.
One of our Directors Alan stayed the day on Monday to join in with the nursery summer fun. The children made him sandy "chocolate ice creams" and they pretended they were at the beach.
We love having picnics and singing songs. One of our favourite songs in an African folk song from Ghana called the 'Che Che Kula'. We borrowed a mix of authentic musical instruments from around the world and used the musical instruments to sing along to a wide range of popular songs.
