Autumn is a beautiful time of year. It's a time where we notice the leaves changing colour and falling from the trees. Spiders think it's a terrific idea to move into our homes and animals are getting ready to over winter. It's also a time where most fungi start fruiting and little mushrooms pop up all over the ground. Our budding mycologists have been looking at books and information booklets all about the different kinds of fungi found in woodland. The children where shown shop bought mushrooms and invited to explore them further using a magnifying glass. They noticed the delicate 'gills' underneath the cap.

We learnt the Makaton sign for mushroom. Some children played in the Mud Kitchen and cooked up pizza with mushroom toppings and mushroom soup.

We conducted a science experiment where we placed a mushroom onto white paper and placed a dark cardboard box over the top. The very next day, curious children excitedly awaited the big reveal. The mushroom had made an imprint onto the paper. We think it looks really effective.
