National Apprenticeship Week

Childcare is, without doubt, one of the most varied and rewarding careers a person can choose to enter.

Apprenticeships are structured training programmes that are designed for a person to gain skills, knowledge, understanding & experience in their chosen area. This really is a benefit for any student embarking in a career with children as the person gains vital experience and a chance to put their skills into practice therefore gaining confidence. Amy who is based in our Dragonflies Room for 2-3 years only has two units left until she gains her Apprenticeship. Amy would "definitely recommend an Apprenticeship" & points out how she felt she could "learn better while actually doing the job."

St. Michael's has welcomed children through its doors for over 20 years, retaining many original staff members. We believe that a feeling of belonging within our team is a crucial element in the care that we offer as we share core values that show in our practice. Therefore, Apprentices benefit shadowing our experienced Nursery Practitioners, picking up excellent skills and values ensuring our provision is of the highest quality. Acquaring these skills really opens potential employment opportunities, progression within this role and potential increased earnings.

Rachael is now a full time employee at St. Michael's based in Kindergarten, after recently becoming qualified at Level 3.

We first met Rachael as a student. Racheal was thrilled to be offered her Apprenticeship at St. Michael's. When asked the benefits, she sums up "you get more experience and that's how I learn best, actually doing the job."

Megan, a current Apprentice agrees, "(St. Michael's) is very supportive of Apprenticeships. You learn while you are doing the job."

Amy in our 0-2 years room also agrees that the importance of a supportive network, "You get support from other staff with time and resources."

We would like to celebrate our Apprentices. Many have remained here at St. Michael's, some have gone on to embark on further training and even teaching careers in Primary Education or a career in Nursing.

We feel privileged to provide Apprenticeships in Barnstaple. It is always an honour to see students embark on the tip of their career with a heart full of enthusiasm, excitement and passion to learn and blossom.
