Full of Beans!

Back in the Spring, the Green Fingers Gardening Club spent many weeks planning, preparing and planting seeds for the summer crops. Our Runner Beans took a little while to get going this year thanks to the extreme heat. One of our families kindly donated some small Runner Bean plants and these took to the ground and grew tall and strong producing beautiful rosy red flowers. We learnt all about pollinators and how they have an important job to land on each flower to help turn them into vegetables. We even had a visit from local bee keepers Alan and Jayne so we could really understand how plants and creatures work in harmony.

We built a bug hotel and packed it with pine cones, cardboard, tubes, pine needles, stones, bricks and hay to attract all kinds of creatures that call the garden their home. We learn about biodiversity and ecology. We even serve up salad scraps from the kitchen to encourage the snails to eat in their hotel and not our vegetable plot!

This year we have had an abundance of potatoes, tomatoes, runner beans and a cucumber. Our lovely chef Liz steamed the beans freshly picked and served for lunch alongside delicious curry and rice. Yummy - a real field to fork experience!
