The excitement had been building for weeks and the team were ready to roar to victory. The theme this year, was in homage to the Lionesses' win this summer, 'Football'. Team Leader Zoe lead the creative organising with designing and making 'St. Michael's' Football T-shirts - a massive thank you to Zoe.
Our football team did not expect to be shown a yellow card but disappointedly received a yellow weather warning issued from the MET office. Because of such conditions, it was decided by the Carnival Committee to cancel. In a statement they explain their decision; "it would have been reckless and show a severe lack of judgement" (to go ahead).
Kev, the Project Manager for Barnstaple Carnival explains "Their wellbeing was a major factor in the decision".
Prior to this decision, many of the team, children and families descended on Barnstaple Square ready for judging. Armed with umbrellas, waterproofs, wellies and showing that true 'St. Michael's spirit' they did not disappoint, showing off their lion costumes, football strips, home made bunting and ready to shake their collection buckets.
We would like to say the biggest THANKYOU to you ALL for your enthusiasm to join us in Barnstaple Carnival. All our families go away with a champion St. Michael's medal for their efforts and we look forward to next year. We are pleased that the Carnival Queen, (a former St. Michael's girl), will be crowned in next year's event.
Cheeky Monkey warmed up with a hot cocoa with the Mayor of Barnstaple no less! He is ready in the Pink Hall to show off his football strip this week!
