Welcome to our nursery!

Based just on the rural outskirts of Barnstaple, North Devon, St. Michaels Nursery and Kindergarten is the perfect solution for your childcare needs. Our Nursery is surrounded by the beautiful countryside and rolling hills of Devon, the perfect place for your child to enjoy their first years of learning.

Children are able to join our nursery from the age of three months where they quickly settle into our safe, happy environment with opportunity to explore, play and learn in the hands of enthusiastic and experienced staff.

We have dedicated rooms for our youngest children.  We understand the value of small group care and space where a child develops their own character at their own pace.  Our baby rooms, of which we have two, care for the youngest babies – a comfortable, quiet environment where individual routines are catered for.

At around the age of 15 – 18 months the toddling babies are able to join our Butterfly room, where they stay until just after turning 2 years old.  Here the children enjoy new experiences and activities are provided to extend their learning – art and craft, role play, cookery and much, much more! The room provides space for ride on toys and a large ball pit. The children build up relationships with staff, practising their new found language, learning to share and negotiate, and working through what can be a frustrating, but exciting, stage of development.

Our 2 – 3 year olds also have their own space, Dragonflies, where the children have now formed strong relationships with their peers and we see more group-play taking place.  The children participate in circle-times, singing and story-times and confidence continues to grow. The children enjoy board games with staff, they have opportunity to practise their self help skills, becoming independent with support when it’s needed – with plenty of praise and cuddles!  These children are often found outside, splashing in puddles or enjoying afternoon tea in the field.

At the age of three years the children move up to the Kindergarten where fun and games mix with an invaluable introduction to more structured activities and pre-school experiences.  Due to extensive use of facilities we are able to offer our children so much more…… physical activities in the sports hall, open fields in which to run and gain confidence, a dining room where we share a nursery-provided meal together and practise our table manners,  and trips to further fields (the town, the theatre, the beach and wherever the children take us!).  At this age, children enjoy responsibilities and their self esteem grows, ensuring a smooth transition from Nursery to School in the academic year following your child’s fourth birthday.
